The Evans Company (East Providence, RI) has responded to a customer request and has built machinery on which it is manufacturing formed heat sinks. The heat sinks, for aerospace use, are different from most heat sinks in that they are not extruded but are formed out of sheet metal. This results in thinner sections and lighter weight in a specified metal. They are thin enough to conform to curved or irregular surfaces.

Because the heat sinks are machine-formed, Evans can produce thinner cross sections. The company is using 6061 aluminum that is 0.005 in thick. Evans has also developed a process to heat treat to the T6 condition while maintaining the formed dimensions. In the T6 condition, aluminum exhibits higher yield strength and thus better structural performance.

In response to a customer request last year Evans added two hydraulic presses and a 75-ton mechanical press to its assortment of smaller straight-sided, progressive and transfer presses. Combined with a new CNC turning center, Evans now finish machines drawn shells to 5 in long with a 7 in OD and 0.080 in wall thickness.
