Beijing is planning to invest $1.02 billion for 56 transformer stations in the next two years. Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, TX) reports that by 2010, each new urban district in Beijing will have at least one transformer substation, and the reliability rate of the power supply in newly built urban districts will be improved, according to the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission.

The plan includes 32 220-kilovolt (kV) transformer stations and 24 11-kV transformer stations in 11 new urban districts. So far, 88 transformer stations have been built in the new districts, and the power supply capacity has increased 25 percent compared with the end of 2005.

By the end of 2010, the districts will have 120 transformer stations, and each new urban district in Beijing will have at least one transformer substation at the 220-kV. Three key new urban districts will each have a total of four 220-kV transformer substations. Tongzhou will also have four, and Yizhuang will have two.

In the next two years, Beijing will also work toward the electrification of rural areas. By the end of 2010, the goal is to build eight electrified counties, 100 electrified towns and 1,500 electrified villages in order to improve the power supply capacity by 50 percent.
