HHI Shipbuilding Division Implements Innovative Digital Shipyard

Siemens PLM Software (Plano, TX), a business unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division and a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, announced that Hyundai Heavy Industries? (Seoul, Korea) shipbuilding division (HHI), the leading shipbuilding company in Korea, selected their Teamcenter® and Tecnomatix® digital lifecycle management solution and digital manufacturing solutions, respectively, to enhance PLM innovation to help reduce cost and improve time to market.

The shipbuilding business unit of HHI is the world?s largest, with nine large-scale docks using six huge ?Goliath Cranes? that are capable of building all types of ships to customer demands. Its major products include oil tankers, petrochemical tankers, bulk carriers, refined oil product tanker, container ships, car carriers, LNG/LPG/FPSO carriers, drill ships, special carriers, destroyers and submarines. In 2008 it built and delivered 1,383 ships (excluding special carriers) and recorded KR 9 trillion won in revenues. Its business divisions include not only shipbuilding, but also offshore and engineering, industrial plant and engineering, engine and machinery, electro electric systems and construction equipment, resolutely maintaining its position as a global leader.

HHI will use Teamcenter as its product data management backbone to automate its entire design process linking CAD drawings and technical data with bill of materials (BOM) to help eliminate errors resulting from isolated design changes. Tecnomatix will enable HHI to innovate its manufacturing process by building a digital shipyard to simulate its production environment to resolve errors and enhance efficiency.

HHI, which selected PLM Software following an extensive evaluation process, was looking for a highly efficient PLM system that would help optimize its collaboration and digital manufacturing environment. HHI cited the software technology?s performance and capacity as key decision factors. The company said it selected PLM Software because it received the highest marks in testing and because they were willing to supply a specialized shipbuilding template.
