HYBRID CHUCK CUTS TOOL TIME IN HALF

This effective combination of centering chuck and magnetic chuck lowers tooling times by up to 50 percent. This solution was first presented by clamping technology expert Röhm GmbH (Sontheim/Brenz, Germany). The hybrid chuck MZMF is the perfect combination of 3-jaw manual chuck and round magnetic support plate. Through the combination of two technologies, workpieces of different sizes can not only be evenly and securely clamped, but also machined from three sides.

Clamping before turning or grinding operations, for example, is carried out in seconds so that machine downtimes are reduced to a minimum. The precise machining of rings in a single, quickly realizable clamping operation is now possible with the new combined centering and magnetic chuck. The usual time-consuming centering by hand, or with specially-made devices that used to be associated with magnetic chucks, is now a thing of the past.

Workpieces of different sizes and contours can be securely extended and clamped in seconds. The 3-jaw centering chuck is operated with a single drive and is suitable for external and internal clamping. The user first aligns the workpiece in the hand-operated centering chuck, then clamps it with the aid of the electric permanent magnet. For this, the chuck is temporarily supplied with power via a plug connection. This connection is only necessary for magnetizing and de-magnetizing.

During machining the plug is removed because the permanent radial pole magnets evenly and securely clamp the workpiece ? completely without power and with a holding force of up to 150 N/cm. Now machining from three sides is possible without the need to re-clamp the workpiece.

The hybrid chuck MZMF has a diameter of 1,250 mm, but can be designed to fit any size a customer requires. For high clamping forces, magnetic clamping and clamping jaws can also be used in combination. In addition, different holding forces of the magnets can be set which securely hold the workpiece extensively and evenly and thus avoid vibrations, which ultimately improves the quality of the surface being machined. The holding forces can be individually adjusted in up to 16 steps in the control unit.

Röhm takes the constantly growing need of customers for time and cost savings very seriously. The new hybrid chuck is the ideal combination of mechanical and electromagnetic forces. Clamping occurs completely across the whole surface, free of vibrations and deformations ? and this is done with a secure hold by the permanent electromagnet.

The new chuck is platform-independent and can also be easily integrated in running production lines. When all is said and done, it provides process reliability coupled with rational series production. Tooling times can be considerably reduced, machine downtimes are significantly shortened and productivity increases, so that the new chuck quickly amortizes itself."

Röhm GmbH has 1,600 employees worldwide, is a pioneer and market leader in the field of technically proven clamping devices. From the smallest drill chuck through turning chucks and compact vices to high-tech clamping devices and a great potential of special designs, under the motto "driven by technology" Röhm supports industrial production worldwide. In 2007 the main factory in Sontheim/Brenz achieved total sales of almost ?200 million.
