How to Improve GTAW and GMAW Welding of Aluminum

A team of welding engineers and aluminum specialists will share information to improve results in GTAW, semi-automatic GMAW and automated GMAW welding of aluminum at the 2010 AWS Aluminum Welding Conference.

Posted: September 9, 2010

Aluminum is corrosion resistant, light and has a high strength-to-weight ratio, but it is challenging to weld because of its physical and chemical properties. A team of Miller (Appleton, WI) welding engineers/aluminum application specialists will deliver seven presentations that can help improve aluminum results at the 13th AWS/AA Aluminum Welding Conference & Exhibition in Seattle on Sept. 21 and 22 at the Doubletree Guest Suites Seattle Airport/Southcenter.

?Aluminum requires special processes, techniques and equipment to optimize welding results, so it?s a source of many welding frustrations. Miller?s AWS Aluminum Conference presentations will provide answers to many common questions, as well as showcase best practices to improve aluminum results,? said Anthony (Tony) Anderson, director of aluminum technology for the ITW Global Welding Center in Appleton.

In addition, Miller will exhibit its aluminum welding solutions, including the AlumaFeed Synergic Aluminum Welding System with built-in ?Profile Pulse? technology and Dynasty AC/DC GTAW solutions. These systems can help increase quality and productivity while addressing operator training issues. Each presentation lasts approximately 45 minutes, which includes a Q&A session following the speaker?s presentation. Miller?s September 21 presentation times, topics and activities are as follows:
? 8:30 a.m.: Welcome and Overview of Aluminum Welding
? 10:45 a.m.: Metal Preparation for Aluminum Welding
? 11:45 a.m.: Filler Alloy Selection Primary Characteristics
? 11:30 a.m. ? 1:30 p.m.: Aluminum Exhibit
? 2:15 p.m.: Fundamentals of GTAW Welding of Aluminum and New Innovations
? 3:15 p.m.: Aluminum Weld Discontinuities: Causes and Cures

Miller?s September 22 presentation times, topics and activities are as follows:
? 8:30 a.m.: Application of the AWS D1.2 Structural Welding Code ? Aluminum
? 9:15 a.m.: Robotic Applications
? 11:30 a.m. ? 1:30 p.m.: Aluminum Exhibit

Miller personnel sharing their aluminum knowledge include: Tony Anderson; Kevin Summers, automation manager/customer support manager with Miller?s Advanced Manufacturing Systems group; Kirk Webb, a welding engineer with Miller TIG Solutions; and Mike Vandenberg, product manager with Miller?s MIG Industrial Group.
