BOOST CUTTING SPEEDS IN CAST IRON STEEL

Seco Tools applies its Duratomic process technology to its drilling tools for steel and cast iron applications where high cutting speeds are used so that tool life can be extended by up to 100 percent in some applications.

Seco Tools Inc. (Troy, MI) has applied its breakthrough Duratomic? process technology to its drilling products, resulting in DP2000, a first-choice grade for steel and cast iron applications where high cutting speeds can be used. In field tests, DP2000 has consistently shown a 30 percent increase in productivity in combination with longer tool life — up to 100 percent in certain applications.

The key behind the new coating success lies in the Duratomic process where the aluminum oxide (AL2O3) is arranged at the atomic level to adjust the coating to fit specific applications and workpieces. Grades produced with this process have consistently shown major improvement in coating toughness as well as wear-resistance. DP2000 imparts reduced heat transference and wear-resistance to achieve low thermal conductivity. This results in longer and predictable tool life and chemical stability with the workpiece.

To gain all the benefits from this new grade, it?s important to have a strong drill body that can provide the support and strength needed for the higher cutting speeds without incurring vibration. Seco?s low-friction coated Perfomax® drill body offers excellent bending and torsion rigidity, as well as offering excellent chip evacuation. The new grade can also run with Seco?s SD542/SD572 indexable drills or Seco Capto drills.

The DP2000 drilling insert grade is being launched with the ?P2 geometry. Its main application areas are steel and cast iron where high feed per revolution is used.
