VFDs and the Top Ten Reasons to Go Hydraulic

Hydraulic presses feature a compact design that is ideal for operation on expensive shop floors today. A typical 20 ton hydraulic press is eight ft high, six ft deep, and two ft wide. A 200 ton press is only ten ft high, nine ft deep, and a little over three ft wide. At ten times the capacity, the 200 ton press only takes up 50 percent more floor space. This maximizes press room floor space with more streamlined machinery.
Hydraulic presses are more common on high volume production lines that were once the domain of the mechanical press. A single hydraulic press can do deep draws, shell reductions, urethane bulging, forming, blank and pierce, stake, punch, press fits, straightening, and assembly within its tonnage range.
A VFD used with a hydraulic press saves energy costs by not running the motor when it is not needed. More energy is saved by programming the VFD to ramp the motor up to speed, eliminating the large electrical in-rush of current. The VFD also allows speed control of the motor so it can run at slower speeds while idle to filter the oil, cool the oil, change accumulators, or other small hp demand requirements.

Hydraulic presses save time during set-up and changeovers. Because the full power of the press can be delivered at any point in the stroke, there is no need to determine the exact location of maximum tonnage. This means hydraulic presses eliminate the very tricky, time-consuming task of setting the stroke that is necessary on a mechanical press. Users of hydraulic presses are often amazed at how quickly they can change dies and get on with a new job during changeovers.

Hydraulic presses are becoming more common on high volume production lines that were once the domain of the mechanical press.
