GibbsCAM takes home top honors in both regional and national events.

Gibbs and Associates (Moorpark, CA), developer of GibbsCAM® software for programming CNC machine tools and a Cimatron (NASDAQ: CIMT) company, has announced that the student taking the Gold medal in the Skills Canada national championship used GibbsCAM CNC programming software.

The Skills program (Skills Canada and SkillsUSA) promotes and encourages youth education and training in the skilled trades and technologies. The annual competitions provide the opportunity for students to compete in their chosen fields, both locally, nationally, and even worldwide.

At the Skills Canada 2013 event, held in Vancouver in June 2013, Collin MacDougall, a student from Red River College in Manitoba, competed on the national level and took Gold in the CNC programming competition, using GibbsCAM software.

“Competitors were required to complete a project on both the machining center and turning center over the two days of competition. Collin was the only competitor to use GibbsCAM to produce his programs. Collin came out on top against competition from all over Canada. He also represented himself, Red River College, and Manitoba admirably,” explains Warren Palmer, manufacturing instructor at RRC.

Students using the software also competed in the regional events in Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec and BC. In the Skills Manitoba competition, Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards in the CNC Machining division were all taken by students of Red River College, exclusively using GibbsCAM software for CNC programming. The Skills Ontario Gold winner also used GibbsCAM software in the competition.

Known for its ease-of-use and short learning curve, GibbsCAM is an ideal choice for both students and industry. Designed by machinists for machinists, GibbsCAM provides an intuitive interface that quickly takes users through all phases of program creation; from geometry, tool, and toolpath creation, through post processing, providing an error-free CNC program. Since the Classroom and Student versions are operationally identical to the industry version, students are well equipped to make the leap from classroom to industry, bringing valuable programming skills with them.

CAM Solutions of Toronto supports Skills Canada students at each competition, including the national level. “When GibbsCAM students participate in SKILLS or design-through-manufacturing competitions, they always place well, because GibbsCAM is fast and easy to use,” says Al Martins, director, CAM Solutions.
