Richards Sheet Metal Works, Inc. (Ogden, UT), a family-owned precision metal manufacturing company in Ogden, is celebrating its 85th anniversary with an expansion, new machinery and special events. The company broke ground on its fourth building onsite in June, which will increase their capacity from approximately 70,000 sq ft to 90,000 sq ft.

Now run by the family’s third generation, owner Stephen R. Richards says their focus on providing their customers with innovative solutions over the years has fueled their company’s growth. “We have continually upgraded our equipment to insure that we are competitive and have the high-tech tools necessary to complete the most detailed projects. In fact, Richards was recently recognized nationally as a FAB 40 metal fabrication company and ranked #22 in the country by The Fabricator magazine, a publication of the Fabricators & manufacturers Association,” said Richards.

The company serves the transportation, water treatment, waste management, food services and sanitation, aerospace, pharmaceutical, military/government, machinery and mining industries. Core services include: laser cutting, precision forming, high-definition plasma, CNC punching, manual, robotic and orbital welding, tool design, prototyping, painting, and much more. “The individual expertise of our employees is truly remarkable and adds to the depth of services that we offer as a company. Many of our employees have been here 20, 30 and 40 years,” said president Sterling N. Jensen.

An open house and company picnic to recognize the company’s 85th anniversary will be held in October upon completion of the new building. The company reported revenue of $16.3 million in 2012. Founder I.L. Richards started Richards Tin Shop in1928 in a tiny 400 square foot shop on 24th Street in Ogden during the Depression. With the help of his father and brothers, they developed an initial market niche for stove flues, small tin bathtubs and watering troughs for the U.S. Forest service.

Richards has evolved many times over the years as their customers’ needs have changed. They now produce world-class products made of metal, finished and ready for application or market. Their clients are scattered throughout the Wasatch Front and neighboring states.
