Nickel Tungsten Carbide Hardfacing Alloys for Upstream Oil & Gas Applications

Stoody 155FC and Stoody 160FC alloys from Victor Technologies are engineered to protect against extreme abrasion, and their applications can be identified through the web-based Stoody Express 4 selection guide that uses simplified search criteria to assist in selecting hardfacing products.

Stoody 155FC and Stoody 160FC alloys have been specifically developed for exceptional weldability and superior abrasion resistance in oil field applications, such as the stabilizer shown here.

Victor TechnologiesTM International, Inc. (St. Louis, MO) has added 155FC and 160FC hardfacing alloys from Stoody (Bowling Green, KY). These alloys have been specifically developed for exceptional weldability and superior abrasion resistance, with weld deposits comprised of special blends of tungsten carbides in nickel-silicon-boron matrix systems.

Designed for use as an overlay, the matrix hardness for 160FC ranges from 40-50 HRC and the alloy exhibits exceptional resistance to corrosion and fine particle erosion, making it particularly well suited for upstream oil and gas production applications, including:

  • Drill bit holders
  • Kicker pads
  • Stabilizers
  • Mud motors

The more ductile 155FC was specifically designed for multiple pass operations where cross checking is undesirable and to offer greater resistance to spalling. 155FC deposits are ideal when thicker buildups of nickel-silicon-boron-tungsten carbide weld deposits are desired and for use as a buffer layer for the more highly wear-resistant 160FC. 155FC exhibits a matrix hardness range of 35-45 HRC, with typical applications that include:

  • Process screw flight edges
  • Drill bit and stabilizer build up
  • Hardbanding (open-hole)

A discussion on how a Nebraskan oilfield customer needed to add 1/2 in of hardfacing build-up on a stabilizer and Stoody developed the 155FC as a new solution.

Both 155FC and 160FC alloys are designed for the GMAW welding process. They are applied at a much lower voltage and heat input than conventional hardfacing alloys. This reduces the interpass temperature and thus the level of distortion in the component. The low heat input gives these alloys a unique characteristic of allowing out-of-position application using a slightly oscillated weave bead.

EXPRESS 4 INTERACTIVE HARDFACING SELECTION GUIDE
Victor Technologies also released the exclusive Stoody® Express 4, a new and improved web-based version of the brand’s popular interactive hardfacing selection guide that makes it possible to identify the optimal hardfacing products for a particular application through simplified selection criteria.

“By choosing the appropriate welding process, base material and wear condition, hardfacing specialists can quickly hone in on our products that will offer the optimal weld performance and wear characteristics demanded by a particular application,” says Ravi Menon, the general manager of Stoody.

This guide gives users free access via the Internet from electronic devices equipped with either PC or Mac operating systems. Express 4 is also accessible by iPhone® and Android® mobile devices.*

Since 1921, Stoody has led the advancement of hardfacing alloy solutions, working with other Victor Technologies brands that are leaders in metal cutting and welding. Its hardfacing and high alloy joining wire and electrode products support the steel, power generation, petroleum oil and gas drilling, recycling, cement, pulp and paper, agricultural, metal casting, construction and other industries.

Headquartered in St. Louis, Victor Technologies provides superior solutions for cutting, gas control and specialty welding equipment under a variety of popular brand names. www.victortechnologies.com
