SBS Balancing Eliminates Excess Grinding and Prevents Crashes

Schmitt Industries released the ExactDress system as their latest solution for SBS balancing to reduce dressing time and increase wheel life.

Schmitt Industries Inc. (Portland, OR) released the ExactDress system as their latest solution for SBS balancing. It reduces dressing time and increases wheel life for both profiled and standard grinding wheels. It uses proprietary acoustic emission sensing technology to monitor the high frequency signals generated on the grinding machine structure during the dressing process.

It compares the current acoustic emission profile of a wheel dressing process to the stored reference waveform of a known good dress to determine and report when the dressing process has been successfully completed. This maximizes the efficiency of the dressing process and ensures that the successful dressing removes a minimum amount of material from the grinding wheel.

The system’s setup is easy. Simply dress a wheel to teach the system the AE Reference waveform of a successful dressing process. The system maps the process into time slices or “zones,” indicated by a bar graph on screen. The system displays progress and informs the CNC control when the entire dress process has completed successfully.

ExactDress also includes gap and crash control. It can detect and report an abnormal contact within milliseconds, allowing the in-feed to be stopped, avoiding a crash, damage or injury. The system’s monitoring permits the operator or CNC control to determine if the wheel is being dressed fully across its width, control the aggressiveness of the process, and maintain the quality of the dressed wheel while conserving process time and wheel material.
