DMG MORI Delivers Machine Tools for Champions at MACH 2014

MACH 2014 (April 7-11) is the UK’s largest event for Manufacturing Technologies. Over five days, more than 20,000 visitors will see some 500 exhibitors putting their latest technologies and innovations through their paces.

The Infinity Red Bull Racing has taken the Formula 1 drivers’ championship and constructors’ championship for the 4th time in a row and, at its Milton Keynes machine shop, it has 20 DMG MORI CNC machines.

Directly opposite the main entrance to Hall 5 at MACH 2014, DMG MORI (Coventry, UK) will be giving pride of place to the Infinity Red Bull Racing F1 car. Infinity Red Bull Racing has taken the Formula 1 drivers’ championship and constructors’ championship for the 4th time in a row and, at its Milton Keynes machine shop, it has 20 DMG MORI CNC machines of which eight are DMU eVo series 5-axis machines.

Alan Peasland, who is responsible for technical partnerships at Infinity Red Bull Racing commented, “It is thanks the DMG MORI machines that we are able to produce our complex components so very quickly while at the same time maintaining top quality and precision.”

New for MACH 2014 is the 4th generation DMC 80 FD duoBLOCK® which, with the powerMASTER 1000 spindle and HSK 100 toolholder interface in the B-axis, can give 77kW of power. Liquid cooling of the machine bed, column, and feed drives has led to 30 percent improvements in accuracy, while larger linear guides and ballscrew drives have resulted in 30percent better rigidity and cutting performance. In addition, the new wheel magazines can hold up to 363 tools in a minimal footprint and achieve 0.5 second tool change times.

The revolutionary CELOS interface will be on both the DMC 80 FD duoBLOCK® and the NLX 4000BY 1500 multi axis turning centre. Its intuitive operation makes it as easy to use as a smartphone or tablet and provides a common platform for the machine operator irrespective of the control system chosen for the machine. CELOS APPS show live information about the machine and the process as well as performance indicators for the current part being manufactured. The JOB MANAGER and JOB ASSISTANT APPS bring together all the documentation, tooling, fixtures and CNC programs required and ensure that every aspect of the job is ready before machining starts, resulting in paperless and highly reliable manufacturing. CELOS is also compatible with ERP systems, can be linked to CAD / CAM systems and is designed to be expanded in capability as more CELOS APPS are developed.

By adding vertical ultrasonic oscillations to the spindle of the ULTRASONIC 20 linear, to be demonstrated at MACH, DMG MORI has made it possible to cut hard, difficult and brittle materials such as glass and ceramics as well as carbon fibre, honeycomb stacks, and titanium and carbon fibre laminated materials. Using DMG MORI developed PCD tooling and oscillations of between 20 and 50 kHz it is possible to achieve feed rates of up to 18m/min and minimise finishing operations through minimal burring and edge damage to laminated materials, making this technology extremely valuable for aerospace applications.

DMG MORI is a supporter of the WorldSkills events. The company hosted the UK Squad selection for the Turning event at its Coventry headquarters for WorldSkills Leipzig 2013. Steve Finn, Managing Director DMG MORI UK says, “We are delighted to be sponsoring the milling and turning competition for WorldSkills which will be taking place at MACH. These events are an inspiration to young aspiring engineers, making them an extremely important platform for the future of high technology manufacture.” WorldSkills will be running six competitions from 7th to 9th April in the Education and Training Zone at MACH and DMG MORI will be supplying CTX 310 ecoline and DMU 635 V ecoline machines for the competition.

As well as WorldSkills, DMG MORI is also sponsoring the MANTRA truck at MACH, which provides a valuable insight into advanced engineering. Adrian Allen from the AMRC explains, “On board the truck, as well as the DMG MORI DuraTurn 2050MC, students will be able to see exhibition material from Rolls-Royce, Boeing and Sandvik Coromant, and experience a 3D Virtual Reality system from Virtalis.” The MANTRA truck is located right next to the Bloodhound SSC.

In addition to all the machines on display on the DMG MORI stand, visitors to MACH will also be able to see MILLTAP 700 and DMU 50 ecoline machines on the YMT Technologies stand as part of the distribution agreement for the South of England agreed between the two companies.
