IMG Expands Capabilities with MC Machinery Systems

By adding a new waterjet and laser the company can now manufacture parts to completion without the need for an outside source. It also allows IMG to create custom-sized gaskets with essentially no lead time, a huge benefit to clients that require a lot of specialty fabrication.

Miller Integrated Management Group (IMG; Hampton Roads, VA), a defense and maritime company, greatly extended its range of manufacturing capabilities with the addition of the latest in Mitsubishi waterjet and laser technology. This recent purchase marks a significant capital investment in IMG’s production capacity, as the company invested close to $2 million in the past year in technologies from MC Machinery Systems, Inc. (Wood Dale, IL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corp.

“With the addition of the new waterjet and laser, we can now manufacture parts to completion without the need for an outside source. It also allows us to create custom-sized gaskets with essentially no lead time. This is a huge benefit to our clients that require a lot of specialty fabrication,” Jerry Miller, the owner of IMG, says. “This investment in technology will certainly help to expand our supplier base as well as lower costs to current clients due to bringing all production in-house.”

The company needed a laser solution that would provide the speed, accuracy, quality, and efficiency that a large job shop demands; but also required that the operation would run unmanned and handle unloading material. The 3015LVPlusII 40CF-X fit these specifications, with 4KW resonators and 6-by-12-ft. sheet capacity.

When it came to waterjet, the company was looking for a machine that could run cold while meeting growing cutting capacity needs, all on a simple user interface. The MWX4 Waterjet, with its onboard taper control system, filled the bill. The system is servo motor driven with more A-axis tilt angle, and more rotational angle C-axis to allow for even straighter parts in thicker material.

Miller Integrated employs more than 180 people in the Hampton Roads, VA area and occupies more than 140,000 sq ft of office and manufacturing space. Their core business is designing and manufacturing electromechancial sub systems. These systems are applied in oceangoing platforms such as the U.S. Navy’s aircraft carriers, Virginia Class submarine and many classes of support and auxiliary ships of the Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard.

“It’s very unique to see a large job shop with both electrical and mechanical competencies, so we were excited to be a part of the process at Miller Integrated,” says Bill Isaac, the vice president of sales and marketing at MC Machinery.

Miller Integrated Management Group is comprised of two divisions, Precision Manufacturing and Integration (PMI) and Integrated Power and Controls (IPC). PMI is a designer and manufacturer of large-scale integrated mechanical structures, special purpose integrated containerized systems, precision fabrication and machining subsystem components. IPC is a designer and manufacturer of shipboard control systems, power distribution systems, integrated shipboard security and intrusion detection systems. www.millerimg.com
