ASTM Addresses Forged Bases for Power Transmission Poles

The society discusses the new guidelines to assist in proper performance to help ensure uninterrupted power to homes, businesses, schools and any other venue using electrical power.

The steel bases of power transmission poles are a critical but often unnoticed component of electrical infrastructure. Proper performance of such bases helps ensure uninterrupted power to homes, businesses, schools and any other venue using electrical power.

A new ASTM International (W. Conshohocken, PA) standard, ASTM A1090/A1090M, Specification for Forged Rings and Hollows Produced from Steels with Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance, provides guidance for the production of such bases using forging methods.

“ASTM A1090/A1090M now gives users and producers of bases multiple methods of production from which to choose,” says Patrick Nowak, a plant metallurgist for Scot Forge, and a ASTM member. “In practice, this increases the diversity of suppliers of raw material, which leads to reductions in cost and lead time.”

Nowak says that primary users of ASTM A1090/A1090M will be manufacturers of bases for power transmission poles. Additionally, the standard will be used by companies supplying power through transmission poles, as well as local, state and federal regulatory agencies involved in approving and monitoring electrical infrastructure projects.

ASTM A1090/A1090M was developed by Subcommittee A01.06 on Steel Forgings and Billets, part of ASTM Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Alloys. All interested parties are welcome to provide feedback on their use of ASTM A1090 and to join in the standards developing activities of A01.
