IMI Celebrates 19 Years of Community Service

The employees of IMI make it their mission to help clean up Hwy M-75.

This year Industrial Magnetics Inc. (Boyne City, MI) celebrates 19 years in the Michigan “Adopt-A-Highway” program. Every spring, summer and fall, the employees of Industrial Magnetics make it their mission to help clean up Hwy M-75 in Boyne City, Michigan.

The idea began in 1995 by IMI employees who wanted to help de-litter the surrounding area. They contacted the Michigan Department of Transportation and were given a two-mile stretch of M-75 to care for, between Dam Road Northwest to Air Industrial Park Drive.

Robin Stanley, the chief executive officer of IMI, states, “We go out three times a year, after business hours – so this is a completely voluntary program for our employees. The vast majority of trash along our stretch of the road is fast food containers, cigarette packs and cigarette butts. Just for fun, there’s usually a discussion post-cleanup as to who found the most unusual thing.”

The companies strategic accounts manager, Pete Friedrich, added, “During May’s clean-up, we collected 17 bags of garbage. It’s unbelievable what you find alongside the road – everything from automobile parts to personal hygiene products. It’s a fun group project though. There’s a lot of camaraderie and it’s a nice way to help out our community.”

Organizations interested in adopting their own stretch of highway can visit  MDOT’s “Adopt-A-Highway”webpage for more information on the application process.
