Mill Steel Co. (Grand Rapids, MI), a flat rolled steel service center company headquartered in Grand Rapids, announced today the purchase, opening and expansion of its operations in Jeffersonville, IN at the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville. As part of the company’s Jeffersonville opening, Mill Steel has purchased the existing 105,000 sq ft facility and will begin an immediate expansion to add 120,000 sq ft. This 225,000 sq ft investment will house two state-of-the art slitting lines in addition to a cut-to-length line which will add to the company’s service capabilities.

Mill Steel’s new Jeffersonville facility will be operational starting in June 2014. The facility located on the Ohio River within the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville is projected to bring a capital investment of $16.1 million to Jeffersonville and an estimated 43 new full-time positions to the region.

“We are very excited by the opportunity to locate in Jeffersonville, which we feel is an outstanding complement to our existing steel service center processing locations of Grand Rapids, Melvindale (Detroit), MI, and Birmingham, AL,” said David Samrick, chief executive officer of Mill Steel.  “We felt it was absolutely critical to position ourselves at a location that will enable us to continue our delivery of outstanding just-in-time services to our growing automotive, construction, appliance and general manufacturing customer base.”

Mill Steel is expected to further develop established relationships with other Port service providers and companies such as Roll Forming Corp., Steel Dynamics, Voss Clark, Kinder Morgan, Omni Source and Metals USA, to name a few.

“This latest announcement is a testament to the many advantages the City of Jeffersonville, as well as the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville, offer a company’s bottom line. We are thrilled Mill Steel chose to leverage Jeffersonville’s locale to serve its growing market and to establish their future in Southern Indiana,” said Jeffersonville mayor Mike Moore.

Mill Steel is an ISO/TS 16949-certified company that currently has operations in Grand Rapids, Melvindale (Detroit), and Birmingham. In addition to being ISO/TS 16949 certified, the new Jeffersonville facility will have an A2LA lab for testing materials, not indifferent from all of its other processing locations.

“Mill Steel’s advanced manufacturing capabilities are a perfect fit for our multimodal port environment,” said Ports of Indiana chief executive officer Rich Cooper. “This company has an extremely impressive leadership team that is keenly aware of the competitive advantages created by our multimodal connectivity and existing synergies between the world-class steel processors located at the port. We welcome Mill Steel to our port family and look forward to helping the company expand its business in southern Indiana.”

Mill Steel, which currently employs approximately 200 associates, plans to begin hiring for positions in Jeffersonville immediately. Interested applicants may apply through the company’s website.
