Efficient aluminum machining of aerospace components requires high-performance 5-axis cutting in a “right-sized” solution. By employing a machine tool with a high-speed, high-power spindle and precision direct-drive B-axis table, manufacturers can expect to achieve highly productive and economical aluminum machining of small components with 3D contours.

This video demonstrates the high-efficiency aluminum machining capabilities of the a61nx-5E 5-axis horizontal machining center from Makino Inc. (Mason, OH). The footage begins with a small structural part running at 18,000 rpm, with a feedrate of 702 ipm. With an axial depth of cut of 0.43 in, and radial depth of cut of 0.98 in, the a61nx-5E is able to complete the part from stock in a matter of minutes. The a61nx-5E also features an innovative pallet changer that simplifies setups by pivoting 45 deg from a vertical to horizontal orientation.
