As the need for hands-on, tailored thermal processing education increases, manufacturers are continually recognizing the value of sending their employees to Ipsen U (Cherry Valley, IL), which recently held their last class of 2014 and is now preparing to host another series of classes in 2015.
This three-day course allows attendees to learn directly from the experts while asking questions about specific equipment and processes, as well as experience a hands-on approach to learning that has proven useful for both those wanting to expand their thermal processing knowledge base as well as first-time furnace operators.
Participants in the October 2014 course came from across the country, including California, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin. Reflecting on the class, attendees found that “the instructors’ hands-on approach and knowledge of leak detection were very helpful.” Others found it useful to “see all of the different furnace designs and be able to relate them to the information talked about earlier in the class,” concluding that “mixing the lecture with actual furnace visualization was extremely valuable.”
Throughout the course, instructors covered an extensive range of topics, from an introduction to vacuum furnaces and heat treating to furnace subsystems, leak detection, maintenance and so much more. Most notable is the participants’ ability to bring up any topic they are interested in for discussion.
This allows for some fluidity and permits the instructors to shape the course to individuals’ specific needs and concerns. In addition, attendees are able to tour the facilities, participate in a leak detection test on a furnace and view firsthand the different furnace components while learning about how they affect other parts of the furnace and/or specific processes.
