A system called the “mobile light stage” was used to record a digital model of the president and then create the 3D portrait.

The 3D printing of a portrait of the president was designed with printable digital models and printed as a life-sized mask and bust using Selective Laser Sintering printers, which are industrial grade devices that produce high-resolution 3D prints.
3D Systems, Inc. (Valencia, CA) is proud to have worked with the Smithsonian Institute on the 3D printing of a portrait of Barack Obama.
