Single-Pass Taper Threading of Pipe
A LOC650 horizontal lathe from Okuma uses Thread Chaser inserts from Seco Tools to accurately thread oil coupling pipe in a cycle time of less than one minute.

Using an LOC650 4-axis horizontal CNC lathe and Thread Chaser inserts from Seco Tools (Troy, MI), Okuma America Corporation (Charlotte, NC) has developed a process for single-pass threading of oil coupling pipe with a cycle time of less than one minute.
Employing an automated pipe loading system from Partners in THINC member Automation Engineering Company, LLC (AEC; Greenville, SC), and a high-pressure coolant system, the process speeds production and improves productivity. The pipe-threading process relies on inserts that are designed for reliability and wear resistance in high-speed cutting conditions.
The 4-axis turning center used in the process applies tandem Seco multi-tooth, chaser-style threading inserts that are pushed through to direct cutting forces back into the machine. The stability and precision of the LOC650 lathe, combined with the 4-axis design and this unique thread-cutting process, provides great results up to 7 in diameter in both accuracy and productivity.
