ASM Elects New Officials
Jon D. Tirpak is president, along with a new vice president, treasurer and three trustees.

ASM International (Materials Park, OH), the world’s largest association of metals-focused materials professionals, announced the election of Jon D. Tirpak, PE, FASM, as their 2015-2016 board of trustees president. Tirpak, who joined ASM in 1980, is ending a one-year term as vice president of the board. Along with president, ASM officially announced the vice president, treasurer and three trustees roles for 2015-2016.
“Through the years, I’ve experienced first-hand the power of ASM to connect materials science professionals and positively shape the industry,” said Tirpak. “To now serve as president of this board is an honor and a privilege and one I’m looking forward to in the coming year.”
Tirpak, who currently serves on the ASM finance and investment committees, has also chaired ASM’s new products and services committee and the federal affairs committee. He is a senior program manager for the SCRA Applied R&D Advanced Materials Division and is also the executive director of the Forging Industry Association-Department of Defense Manufacturing Consortium and program manager of the Defense Logistics Agency’s PRO-FAST Program.
“Our incoming members to the board of trustees represent some of the most accomplished professionals in materials science advancement, outreach and innovation,” said Terry Mosier, the managing director at ASM. “Our organization stands as a global leader in materials engineering and the 2015-2016 board is ready to continue and expand that legacy. I look forward to working with the ASM board in the coming year to serve the needs of our members, advance the organization, and the materials science community as a whole.”
Additional new appointees to the 2015-2016 Board include:
Dr. William E. Frazier, FASM, Vice President-elect
Inducted as an ASM Fellow in 1996 and a member of the Society since 1977, Dr. Frazier served as a trustee from 2003 through 2007 and held positions on numerous ASM committees. He currently is an associate editor for the Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance. Dr. Frazier is a Navy senior scientist for materials engineering and serves as the chief scientist of the Air Vehicle Engineering Department at Naval Air Systems Command. He was elected to a one-year term.
Craig D. Clauser, PE, Treasurer-elect
Clauser joined ASM in 1967 and has been elected to a second term as treasurer, joining the board in 2014. He has served as chairman of the ASM chapter operations committee and the handbook committee and is founder, the president and owner of Craig Clauser Engineering Consulting Inc., a company providing national metallurgical engineering services, primarily in the areas of failure analysis and process improvement. He was elected to a one-year term.
Dr. Ellen K. Cerreta, Trustee-elect
Dr. Cerreta joined ASM in 1997. She is the group leader for MST-8, the Materials in Radiation and Dynamic Extremes Group, at Los Alamos National Laboratory. After receiving her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, she joined Los Alamos as a post-doctoral associate in 2001. In addition to serving on the ASM board of trustees, Dr. Cerreta is an adjunct faculty member at The Institute of Shock Physics at Washington State University. She was elected to a three-year term as trustee.
Dr. Ryan M. Deacon, Trustee-elect
Since joining ASM in 1997, Dr. Deacon has held a number of volunteer positions within the society. He is a materials scientist in the materials engineering and research group of the DuPont Corporation and also serves as the corporate failure analyst for the company. Dr. Deacon has authored and co-authored numerous materials science publications, is listed on several patents and is a member of The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, and other leading industry associations. He will serve a three-year term.
Professor Sudipta Seal, FASM, Trustee-elect
Professor Seal joined ASM in 1993. He is the director of the Advanced Materials Processing and Analysis Center and NanoScience Technology Center at the University of Central Florida. In 2014, Dr. Seal was named interim chairman of the Materials Science and Engineering Department of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. He is also a Pegasus professor and University Distinguished Professor. He will serve a three-year term.
