Paxton & Vierling Steel Installs Landmark Coil Line

Their new Cut-To-Length line is one of the largest and fastest in the world.

Posted: March 18, 2016

Cycle times are under eight seconds from the time the material is stopped for stretching to the time it starts moving again -- three times faster than other lines on the market. The line also runs in both start/stop and looping modes on material up to .375 in thick.
Material runs in the loop while being stretched up to twice as fast as the same material run in start/stop mode, again making the line one of the fastest in the industry.
The High Speed Shear uses “Switch Blade” technology to automatically set knife clearance and adjust the angle of the Shear to improve squareness of cut parts up one inch thick by 77 in wide off 80,000 lb coils. Maximum stack length is 576 in, with provisions to run up to 720 in.

Red Bud Industries (Red Bud, IL) recently celebrated a landmark by processing the first one inch (25.4 mm) thick coil on their lines. The line is installed at the Omaha, NE, facility of Paxton & Veirling Steel Company and is not only the biggest Cut-To-Length line ever built by Red Bud, but also one of the largest in the world.

The line includes a 3,000 ton (2,678 metric ton) Stretcher Leveler featuring the SUREGRIP® system with technology that allows hot rolled, pickled and oiled material and other hard-to-grip material to be run without slippage or having to change the gripper pads. The non-slip metallic grippers can also be used for up to a year or longer without needing to be replaced. The unit also features “Quick Draw” technology that makes it the world’s fastest Stretcher Leveler of its size.

Cycle times are under eight seconds from the time the material is stopped for stretching to the time it starts moving again. This is up to three times faster than other units on the market. The line also runs in both start/stop and looping modes. Material up to .375 in (9.53 mm) thick can be run in looping mode, again making the line one of only a select few that can do so. Material that can run in the loop while being stretched runs up to twice as fast as the same material run in start/stop mode, again making the line one of the fastest in the industry.

Another notable feature is a High Speed Shear that incorporates new “Switch Blade” technology. Quick change knife cassettes reduce blade changes to just a few minutes. The Shear also automatically sets knife clearance and has the ability to automatically adjust the angle of the Shear in order to improve squareness tolerance of the cut parts. The new line is rated for one inch (25.4 mm) material at 77 in (1956 mm) wide and has an 80,000 lb (36,287 kg) coil capacity. Maximum stack length is 576 in (14,630 mm) with provisions to run up to 720 in (18,288 mm). The line has a maximum speed of 200 fpm (61 mpm).
