Tongtai Machine & Tool Co. Ltd. (Kaohsung, Taiwan) hosted a worldwide open house recently, bringing together more than 1,000 of their customers, suppliers and media from around the world to their headquarters in Kaohsung. The event showcased their commitment to research and development, innovation, technology application and service. Their North American importer and distributor, Absolute Machine Tools, Inc. (Lorain, OH) sent several of their own sales and dealer teams to learn more about Tongtai.

Themed Together to the Future, the two-day event was even more noteworthy in that open houses and seminars of this type are rare in Taiwan. The group also saw the company’s new 205,000 sq ft factory being built in the Taiwan Southern Science Park that brings their total factory space up to 750,000 sq ft. The government only allows the most modern, technically advanced companies to build in the park.

“The open house emphasized their commitment to innovative machine tool development, advanced manufacturing abilities and technology applications,” stated Steve Ortner, the president of Absolute Machine Tools. “It was a success in that all of our attendees were able to see first-hand the company’s efforts to develop more machine functions to increase our customers’ competitiveness. Learning more about the scope of the company was eye-opening for many, and their research and development initiatives surrounding Industry 4.0, additive technologies, and special tooling for aerospace were particularly impressive to our group.”

The event showcased 46 machine models built within the past two years, including CNC lathes, horizontal and vertical machining centers, floor-type boring and milling machines, and metal additive manufacturing equipment. Its subsidiaries, including Anger Machining GmbH (Traun, Austria), demonstrated their own brand of transfer machines.

There were three featured pavilions: “Foundation,” which focused on the company’s 47 years of history; “Solutions,” which addressed their manufacturing abilities and industry applications through presentations and demonstrations; and “Innovation,” which showed their high-end technologies and trends involving machine tool development, including powder bed infusion additive manufacturing equipment.

Eight topical seminars were offered over two days, providing visitors with multiple opportunities to learn more about the aspects of manufacturing that pertained to them and to mingle with people with common interests. In addition to the product launch, the company made presentations on the Tongtai Key to Industry 4.0, Tooling Solutions for the Aerospace Industry, and the Connection of them and Industry 4.0, as well as future development.

The first night ended in a gala dinner at which 400 guests were given the chance to win prizes ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to be used toward the purchase of their machines. Company chairman Jui-hsiung Yen addressed the crowd, emphasizing their commitment to research even during the economic downturn and well into the future. The open house concluded with a press conference announcing Tongtai’s agreement with Materialise NV (Leuven, Belgium), an additive manufacturer, and the Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan to develop and promote additive software programs.
