Super Precise Robotic Grit Blaster

This robotic grit blaster uses an RXS-400 Rotary-Index Twin Spindle machine from Guyson for its operating platform.

Designed for cellular manufacturing, the expanded RXS-400 Rotary-Index Twin Spindle machine utilizes a Fanuc M710 Robot that carries a bank of eight Guyson Model 900 guns mounted in a custom designed heavy duty cabinet with powered sliding door. The robot suit is custom designed to accommodate the ultimate in abrasion protection and freedom of movement, reducing the possibility of robot faults due to the suit binding on the arm. (first view)

The RXS-400 Rotary-Index Twin Spindle machine from Guyson Corporation (Saratoga Springs, NY) was designed for cellular manufacturing and is the platform to use for building a Super Precise Robotic grit blaster. The Expanded version utilizes a Fanuc M710 Robot that carries a bank of eight Guyson Model 900 guns mounted in a custom designed heavy duty cabinet with powered sliding door. The robot suit is custom designed to accommodate the ultimate in abrasion protection and freedom of movement, reducing the possibility of robot faults due to the suit binding on the arm.

The robot controls Twin precision Alpha S4 servos coupled to Apex precision 50:1 ratio gear boxes. A precision two-stop CAM Technologies indexer puts the part in the exact location for the robot to paint the surface. A roof-mounted Precision Rotary Union supplies air to the custom built vacuum holding fixtures. The 300/28 reclaim system with urethane lining for super abrasion protection is coupled to a 36 in four-deck classifier with thin ball tray. Media fluidity is maintained by adding a PLC-controlled heater pad and a vibrator that is mounted to the 6 cu ft mixer box.

Broken down media is replenished using the PLC-controlled Media adder. It adds controlled amounts of new media that is a necessity for maintaining a precision finish. The metering of the metal bead media is controlled through the PLC and Magnavalves. The media is pre-staged in custom designed miniature hoppers before being delivered to the control valves. An optional Panleview HMI and all documentation was provided in dual language per the customer’s request. All ducting from the cabinet to the reclaim and onto the dust collector was converted to metal tubing because of the high-dust KST values.
