Ideal for shops that need milling and turning capabilities for tiny holes, minute features, extreme accuracies and fine surface finishes on small parts, the CM-1 Compact Mill from Haas is a small-footprint, high accuracy system for production and prototyping of small, high precision 2D and 3D parts, such as those found in the communications, aerospace, medical, and dental industries.

Need a small footprint CNC lathe to run small, precision parts? Want to run those parts unattended? The innovative CL-1 from Haas Automation, Inc. (Oxnard, CA) is an ultra-compact CNC chucker lathe that comes standard with an 8-station automatic turret, making it perfect for producing small, precision parts, such as those found in the communications, aerospace, medical, and dental industries. The CL-1 is equipped with a 5 hp (3.7 kW) spindle that turns to 6,000 rpm. The spindle’s threaded 5C collet nose easily handles bar stock up to 1 in (25.4 mm) diameter and features an automatic air-closer. For higher torque applications, an optional 8 hp (5.9 kW) 6,000 rpm spindle is available that provides double the torque of the standard spindle, as well as higher accel/decel rates.

For longer production runs and unattended machining, an optional integrated pneumatic bar feeder and built-in parts catcher are available. The bar feeder automatically loads 0.25 in to 1 in (6.4 mm to 25.4 mm) diameter bars up to one meter long. The CL-1’s high-speed cross slide and servo-driven 8-station turret guarantee fast chip-to-chip times and short cycle times while offering quick setup and good clearance. The turret uses gang-style tooling on ½ in (13 mm) centers. Machine XZ travels are 12 in x 8 in (305 x 203 mm) and brushless servos on both axes yield cutting feeds to 500 ipm (12.7 m/min) and rapids to 757 ipm (19.2 m/min). The user-friendly control makes operation and set up simple. Other standard equipment includes a full C-axis, a coolant system, rigid tapping, a 15 in color LCD monitor and built-in USB connectivity.

Available high productivity options include Ethernet connectivity, a power-failure detection module, user-definable macros, expanded program memory and more. For full 5-axis machining on the CL-1, Haas offers the TRT70 ultra-compact dual-axis tilting rotary table for ±120 deg of tilt and 360 deg of rotation to position parts to almost any angle for machining. The TRT70 provides 60 ft-lb (81.3 Nm) of torque on the tilt axis and 40 ft-lb (54.2 Nm) on the rotary axis for aggressive machining, and indexing speeds of 410 deg/sec on the tilt axis and 620 deg/sec on the rotary axis to ensure short cycle times. The precision-ground 70 mm (2.76 in) platter features multiple bolt patterns and a precision through-bore for versatile fixturing, and will swing parts up to 4.0 in (102 mm) diameter. The ultra-compact CL-1 can be moved easily with a pallet jack or equipment dolly and, with its small size and light weight, the machine also fits into most freight elevators. It runs on single-phase power (240 VAC).

For facilities needing milling capabilities as well as turning, small parts manufacturing can pose significant machining challenges for the average job shop. Tiny holes, minute features, extreme accuracies, and fine surface finishes may prove difficult for larger CNC machines. The new CM-1 Compact Mill is a small-footprint, high accuracy system for the production and prototyping of small, high precision 2D and 3D parts, such as those found in the communications, aerospace, medical, and dental industries. It features 12 in x 10 in x 12 in travels, a 20 in x 10 in T-slot table, a 30,000 rpm ISO 20-taper spindle, and a 20-pocket automatic tool changer. Maximum cutting feeds are 500 ipm, with rapids to 757 ipm for reduced cycle times.

The user-friendly NextGen control makes set up and operation simple. Standard equipment includes a 15 in color LCD monitor, 1 GB of program memory, Ethernet connectivity, a power-failure detection module, a USB port, a coolant system, high speed machining software and more. A number of high productivity options are also available, including a 50,000 rpm spindle and full 5-axis capability. The CM-1 is small enough to fit into most freight elevators and can easily be moved with a pallet jack or equipment dolly. The machine runs on single-phase power.
