Aerospace Supplier Collaborates with Fives to Advance Titanium Cutting

Acromil orders two advanced Cincinnati Wide-Range Titanium Profilers and a Giddings & Lewis Horizontal Boring Mill to start a two-phase expansion.

Posted: December 14, 2017

The two Cincinnati Wide-Range (WR) Titanium Profilers ordered by Acromil are optimized for difficult to machine materials, such as titanium and stainless steel.

Acromil Corporation (City of Industry, CA) has been a primary supplier of complex structural components and assemblies to the aerospace and defense industries since 1959. Their 100,000 sq ft facility houses state-of-the-art equipment to manufacture, inspect and assemble parts out of aluminum, titanium and steel. They maintain a Management System in accordance with AS9100 and ISO9001 standards that has been certified by DNV, and they are ITAR-registered with the United States Department of State.

Acromil ordered two advanced Cincinnati Wide-Range (WR) Titanium Profilers and a Giddings & Lewis Horizontal Boring Mill (HBM) from Fives Machining Systems Inc. (Hebron, KY) as the start of a two-phase expansion. The new Cincinnati WR profilers are optimized for difficult to machine materials, such as titanium and stainless steel and are designed, manufactured and delivered by Fives Cincinnati in Hebron, while the Giddings & Lewis HBM is produced and shipped from Fives Giddings & Lewis in Fond du Lac, WI.

Acromil and Fives will also collaborate to establish a world-class hard metals manufacturing center with the latest 5-axis high metal removal technology, with a goal of developing the most productive titanium cutting machines available. “Our expansion demonstrates a commitment to the defense and aerospace industries, with the primary goal of developing us to be a Tier 1 supplier, supporting customer needs for detail parts and assemblies,” said Ed Hatcher, the executive vice president of Acromil. “We believe this collaboration will change the way aerospace manufacturers approach titanium machining.”

“These new profilers have been tested extensively with excellent results,” said Steve Thiry, the president and general manager of Fives Machining Systems Inc. “The HBM will handle titanium structural components (for a major aerospace OEM) that will highlight the versatility of our machines. It’s also a great opportunity for us to work with industry veterans like Ed Hatcher as we continue to develop, and advance, high-performance titanium cutting.”
