Beckwood Engineers Two Servo-Driven Electro-Mechanical Presses

These two 13 ton presses will be used by a leading footwear manufacturer in a trimming application.

Posted: January 17, 2018

The twin 40 in x 50 in x 158 in presses feature a monolithic frame, quick die clamps, 13 in of stroke, and a knockout cylinder mounted inside the ram weldment to strip the part after it is trimmed. Using a Parker XFC electro-mechanical actuator to drive the main ram and a load cell to monitor force feedback, cycle times on these machines will average 2.5 seconds or less. To ensure parallelism, an 8-point square gib guidance system with self-lubricating, graphite-impregnated bronze wear strips will be included.

Beckwood Press Company (St. Louis, MO), a leading manufacturer of custom hydraulic presses and automation systems and the Triform line of precision forming equipment, has been awarded a contract to manufacture two 13 ton servo-driven electro-mechanical presses for use by a leading footwear manufacturer in a trimming application.

Scheduled for delivery in February 2018, the twin 40 in x 50 in x 158 in presses feature a monolithic frame, quick die clamps, 13 in of stroke, and a knockout cylinder mounted inside the ram weldment to strip the part after it is trimmed. Gib-guided presses typically have very tight clearances and are fully adjustable left-to-right as well as front-to-back, providing superior resistance to lateral slide motion.

“Expanding our custom press offerings to include electro-mechanical machines has been a natural evolution for us,” said Beckwood president Jeffrey Debus. “We approached this project like any other. After a comprehensive review of the application, we developed a solution that would improve our customer’s efficiency and accuracy. This time, a servo-driven electro-mechanical machine was the best choice.”
