Cara Lombardo of the Wall Street Journal reports that Nucor Corporation (Charlotte, NC) will build a $240 million steel mill, the latest investment from the steel manufacturer in a bid to capitalize on a rising market for the metal. John Ferriola, the chief executive of the company, said the plant would produce reinforcing steel bars used in construction and will give them an advantage over competitors who ship rebar from long distances. Nucor expects the mill to be built in Polk County and will employ 250 people, paying an average salary of $66,000.
Construction of the plant, which will have an estimated annual capacity of 350,000 tons, is expected to take two years, pending permit and regulatory approvals. To read the entire report, please click here. Last year, Nucor announced plans to build a new rebar-producing mill in Missouri. Last week, United States Steel Corporation (Pittsburgh, PA) said they would fire up a blast furnace in Granite City, IL, and call back 500 workers. Century Aluminum Co. (Chicago, IL) has said they will restart lines at a smelter in Kentucky that has been curtailed since 2015, doubling their workforce there to 600.
