Sandvik Coromant Sponsors CCAM Machining Research Day

Manufacturers from aerospace and other industries gathered for an opportunity to hear from industry experts about machining technologies and challenges.

CCAM's Machining Research Day attracted manufacturers from aerospace and other industries for an opportunity to hear from industry experts about machining technologies and challenges. After the morning speaker series, the afternoon session included a panel discussion that included Sandvik Coromant’s William Durow, the manager of the Global Engineering Project Office.

Sandvik Coromant (Fairlawn, NJ) was a sponsor at the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM; Disputanta, VA) Machining Research Day, which was held recently at their facility in Prince George County, VA. With a focus on current machining technologies and challenges, the day included an impressive speaker line-up and panel of industry experts from manufacturing, academia, and government.

The first of four machining focus days for 2018, the event attracted manufacturers from aerospace and other industries for an opportunity to hear from industry experts about machining technologies and challenges. After the morning speaker series, the afternoon session included a panel discussion that included Sandvik Coromant’s William Durow, the manager, of the Global Engineering Project Office.

‎According to Durow, “CCAM’s Machining Research Day was a great opportunity to gather industry leaders and academia together in one room so that we can hear and understand each other challenges. New technologies are often developed in the academic world but they struggle with finding an avenue for these new concepts. Connecting academia with manufacturing allows us to identify opportunities to bring that technology into the manufacturing world. Connecting people is important and this as a forum was a perfect place to do that.”

The afternoon panel was moderated by Dr. Sydney G. Roberts, the director of Strategic Partnerships at CCAM and was comprised of industry experts from GF Machining Solutions (Lincolnshire, IL), Kyocera (Fairfield, NJ), and Sandvik Coromant, as well as academics from University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC; Charlotte, NC), Advanced Manufacturing Research Center (AMRC), and the Air Force Research Library. Topics included education and the future workforce, how to determine the biggest opportunities for process optimization in machining, handling new materials with low machinability, the role that process modeling will continue to play and how hybrid machining fits into the future.

The next focus day for CCAM is Automation Research Day on April 25, 2018 which will address the Intelligent Factory and challenges implementing Industry 4.0/Industrial Internet of Things concepts. The use of data analytics and collaborative robotics for applications that benefit manufacturing will be highlighted during the day. CCAM’s mission is to solve advanced manufacturing problems for their members. Dr. Jaime Camelio, their chief technology officer noted, “CCAM delivers value and ROI through process optimization, advanced sensing and modeling, and simulation for enhanced manufacturing.”
