Doosan Machine Tools America (Pine Brook, NJ) offers their new NHP Horizontal Machining Center series, built from the ground up for rapid metal removal rates. Designed to meet the manufacturing demands of aerospace applications, the 400 mm pallet NHP 4000 and 500 mm pallet NHP 5000 are feature-rich, yet configurable for a range of applications. These NHP machines come standard with a 15,000 rpm spindle with 40 hp and 169 ft-lb of torque. For heavy cutting, a high torque 15,000 rpm spindle with 223 ft-lb is available, and a 20,000 rpm spindle is in development for shops with higher speed precision applications. Up to 1G acceleration/deceleration on X, Y and Z-axes significantly enhances productivity, delivering productivity increases as high as 25 percent over their previous model. Ball screw shaft and bearing cooling systems keep the temperature of fast moving axes stable, ensuring precision machining.
A new random access disc-type tool magazine allows high speed 0.9 second tool-to-tool and 2.3 second chip-to-chip times. In addition to minimizing non-cutting time, this design also reduces vibration, resulting in more stable operation. In optimizing the construction of the machine, the footprint of the NHP has been reduced by 15 percent compared to the previous model, yet the machining area has been expanded by 24 percent. The three-point leveling design makes machine installation and maintenance much more convenient. The center-through bed chip management evacuates large volumes of chips quickly for enhanced efficiency. The pallets can accommodate loads of up to 400 kg (880 lb), for the NHP 4000 and up to 500 kg (1100 lb) for the NHP 5000, and both through-pallet and overhead hydraulic fixturing options are available. Additionally, the APC has been refined to achieve a 27 percent faster indexing time.
Doosan also offers their compact DNM 4000 vertical machining center for lean cell applications where space is tight, but productivity and cutting performance are essential. Able to take more aggressive cuts than similarly sized 30 taper drill-tap machines, the DNM 4000 is ideal for machining small parts in tough-to machine materials for aerospace applications, as well as medical, automotive, job shops, firearms and die and mold jobs. Featuring a 12,000 rpm, 25 hp, 40 taper spindle with 86 ft-lb of torque and a standard BIG-PLUS dual-contact interface, this VMC delivers shorter cycle times, improved part surface finishes and longer tool life than competitive machines. It has a compact footprint of only 65 in W x 112 in L x 108 in H and travels of 20.5 in X, 15.7 in Y and 18.9 in Z. Its two-door design incorporates the largest opening width in its class, allowing for easy operator access. The coolant system is located in the rear of the machine so that the DNM can be placed mere inches from the neighboring machines.
The DNM 4000 comes with a long list of standard features, including a 20-tool capacity magazine with a 1.3 second tool-to-tool time, standard spindle cooler, Doosan Smart Thermal Monitoring software, grease lubrication system and 230 psi through-spindle coolant. The FANUC i control with Easy Operation Package (EOP) software developed by Doosan provides numerous functions designed for convenient operation and reduced setup time.
