Automotive Manufacturer Boosts Production with Custom Transfer Tooling

To reduce weight for lower deflection, Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Canada uses Accelerate Lightweight Tooling from Destaco for higher precision, reduced scrap and improved operational efficiency on their stamping press.

Made of high-strength aluminum, the Accelerate Lightweight Tooling reduces weight, dramatically resulting in lower deflection for higher precision and reduced scrap. The 9 lb and 10 lb systems were specially designed to fit TMMC’s existing stamping press for a cost-effective solution that’s ready to go and easy to operate.

Equipped with a 17 lb transfer tooling system, Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Canada, Inc. (TMMC; Cambridge, ON) regularly faced production challenges related to low precision, excessive scrap and downtime. In addition to a lighter, faster transfer tooling system for improved operational efficiency on their stamping press, they also needed to overcome specific functionality and ergonomic requirements. TMMC worked with Destaco (Auburn Hills, MI) to develop two customized transfer tooling systems, a 9 lb and 10 lb option, to increase operational throughput. Made of high-strength aluminum, the Accelerate® Lightweight Tooling reduces weight dramatically resulting in lower deflection for higher precision and reduced scrap. Both systems were specially designed to fit TMMC’s existing stamping press for a cost-effective solution that’s ready to go and easy to operate.

In operation since June 2015, these lightweight transfer tooling systems have provided TMMC with higher production rates, and reduced scrap and downtime. As a result, the shop has experienced improved production quality and lower overall costs. They continue to work with Destaco on plans to modify the tooling for even more cost savings.
