Global Shop Solutions (The Woodlands, TX), a leading provider of ERP software for small to medium-size manufacturers, sponsored their second room makeover in partnership with Sunshine Spaces, a nonprofit organization based in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that designs dream rooms for children battling long-term and terminal illnesses. Sunshine Spaces has provided room and home makeovers for over 20 families across the United States, including several homes in Houston devastated by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The latest room makeover was for eight-year-old Will Byers and his younger sister Samantha, local residents of Spring, TX.
Diagnosed in 2014, Will has been courageously battling Sanfilippo Syndrome, a rare metabolic disorder that currently has no cure or treatment. Often called childhood Alzheimer’s, Sanfilippo Syndrome is a progressive disorder, meaning that at birth children appear typical and do not show signs. As the disease progresses, the children degenerate, losing the ability to speak, walk and eat.
The Byers family was sent on an all-expenses paid vacation to New York City while the remodel was in progress. “Being able to have a fresh new start is good for him. It really means the world to us,” said Tim Byers, Will’s father. Valerie Byers, Will’s mother, adds, “We learn to live in the moment and to just be grateful for what we have, and we’re so grateful for all the family and friends who have supported us during this journey with Sanfilippo Syndrome.”
Always eager to partner with Sunshine Spaces, Global Shop Solutions provided 40 volunteers and over 400 volunteer hours. Jayland Keeney, the director of human resources, said, “The Byers are such a great Christian family, and Will is a very special boy. Anytime we can do something to make the smallest of change in someone’s life, we want to do that.” The remodel included demolition, construction, decoration, assembly, cleaning, and presentation for both children’s bedrooms and their bathroom to make more space for Will as his needs become more demanding.
In 2019, the company plans to sponsor the makeover for the Montgomery County Youth Services Shelter.
