Building on the strength of natural hemp fiber and its long history of use in industry, PLANTEX® SUNFIRE CERAMIC™ segmented flap discs from CS Unitec, Inc. (Norwalk, CT) are specifically developed for grinding, blending and finishing all metals with one disc. They are a strong, reliable, chemical-resistant alternative to conventional fiberglass-backed discs. Fabricators can remove up to 9 lb of metal with one disc. The flaps use an innovative ceramic-hybrid grit structure that provides aggressive material removal, as well as controlled blending and finishing: the 40/60 combination multi-grain grit grinds like a 40, blends and finishes like a 60. These flap discs are ideal for steel, stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, bronze and other applications, and are approved for 260 ft/sec ANSI B7.1, DIN EN 13743. They operate at ideal speeds of 6,000 rpm to 9,000 rpm and have a maximum speed up to 13,200 rpm.
The discs have a 5/8 in x 11 hub and feature a backing plate composed of a high-tech, fiberglass-free compound. The fiber backing is 70 percent natural hemp, a renewal resource, and 30 percent polypropylene. This hemp-based natural fiber backing plate is environmentally friendly, runs safer and does not emit harsh fumes or glass splinters when in use. It boasts high-strength construction, yet it is flexible to conform to the surface of the workpiece. It is extremely versatile, easily trimmable for a wide variety of applications and use in tight spaces.
