Hot wire AM (HWD) and laser metal deposition (LMD) technologies are used in hybrid multi-tasking technologies from Mazak Corporation (Florence, KY) that combine both additive and conventional subtractive processing capabilities to handle the most demanding, complex parts in single setups for complete part processing. HWD, also known as wire arc AM, uses an arc torch to melt metal wire directly onto workpieces, creating exceptionally precise sealing coatings as well as near-net-shape part features. LMD uses the heat from one or more lasers to create perfect coatings and build intricate micro-machined part features.
