Ultralight Magnesium Alloys for Superior Welding

An affordable, high performance and sustainable alternative to aluminum, steel and titanium, ultralight ALLITE Super Magnesium alloys are specifically designed for superior welding, forging, strength and stability.

Specifically designed for superior welding, forging, strength and stability while maintaining an ultralight weight, ALLITE® Super Magnesium™ alloys from Allite Inc. (Miamisburg, OH) are an affordable, high performance and sustainable alternative to aluminum, steel, and titanium. These premier magnesium alloys are 33 percent lighter than aluminum while maintaining a high strength-to-weight ratio, 75 percent lighter than steel and 56 percent stronger than Grade 1 titanium. They also have one of the smallest carbon footprints of all structural materials and are entirely recyclable. In development since 2006, these superior alloys were previously only authorized for use in classified defense and aerospace applications. But now ALLITE Super Magnesium is being introduced to the bicycle industry by United Wheels Company Limited (Miamisburg, OH) through their subsidiaries Huffy Corporation (Dayton, OH), Niner Brands International (Fort Collins, CO) and Batch Outdoors Inc. (Miamisburg, OH).

As a full-service magnesium company, Allite has the ability to test all products to the highest industry standards and has received interest across diverse global organizations as well. Aiming to improve mechanical properties, plasticity and deformation processing of conventional magnesium alloys, they developed two unique rare earth magnesium alloys with high strength, high plasticity and good corrosion resistance. The relationship between the proprietary composition, cooling and extrusion processing technology, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of these two alloys – AE81 and ZE62 – received industry recognition in 2019 when Allite received the IMA Award of Excellence in the process category. “As magnesium’s public profile as a sustainable alternative material continues to rise, we are continually working to develop opportunities and new applications for our AE81 and ZE62 alloys,” said Bruno Maier, the chief executive of Allite. “Receiving a benchmark award like this not only validates our hard work, but helps us move forward into applying them in other fields, such as construction, electronics and sports.”
