HOLE IN ONE

Solid and indexable cutting tools that increase productivity (and profitability) by more efficiently boring, drilling, reaming, tapping, threading, and finishing.

Posted: January 17, 2020

One example of the latest innovations featured in our February spotlight: Allied Machine & Engineering’s viscoelastically mounted Novitech damper modules and the 4TEX IC drill.

Take a closer look at some of the latest advances that might help you increase productivity, improve quality and reduce costs.

Allied Machine Expands Boring Tool Line

Allied Machine & Engineering (Greenville, SC) adds two hole-roughing and -finishing solutions that provide flexibility and modular integration.

Nine New Grinders & Sanders

Chicago Pneumatic’s CP3550 product lineup of 17 compatible finishing models allows perfect matching of applications and tools. Greater torque increases material removal rates and operator comfort while deburring, contouring, chamfering, fettling, removing seam welds, preparing surfaces, cleaning, polishing, and finishing.

Tap for High-Strength Steels and Titanium Alloys

Dormer Pramet (Elgin, IL) makes selecting the right tool for the job quick and easy by ringing each Shark Line tap with a color that denotes material suitability. A red ring is for alloy steels; yellow is for structural, carbon, and low-alloy steels; blue is for stainless steel; and white is for cast iron.

New Control Interface for Gundrilling Machine

While still using a PC-based system featuring Beckhoff controls, the hardware and software on the Eldorado gundrilling machine from Kays Engineering (Marshall, MO) have been improved with job shop operators in mind.

Military Helicopters Utilize Gundrilling Machine

The DeHoff 1536T from Kays Engineering (Marshall, MO) is a gundrilling machine used to manufacture high-performance military helicopters. Several  drivetrain components are gundrilled to produce hollow centers, which reduces mass while maintaining high rotational rigidity.

Tooling for Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Components

“The main bore that houses the stator of an electric motor is roughly 9.84 in (250 mm) in diameter and 15.74 in (400 mm) long with a smaller bearing bore at the bottom,” says Kennametal (Pittsburgh, PA) Program Engineering Manager Harald Bruetting. “When manufactured using conventional means, a reamer for this application would weigh more than 55 lbs (25 kgs), far too heavy for the machine tool or an operator working with the tool.”

Five Solid-in-Steel Drills

Mapal (Port Huron, MI) boring tools now include: Newly designed chip flute and special face geometry make very high feeds and cutting speeds possible with the Mega Pilot Drill and Mega Deep Drill. The Deep Drill’s head coating optimizes chip removal. Developed for diameters from 1 mm to 2.9 mm.

21-Tool Drill

The RoboDrill eco is named after its spindle, which returns energy to the machine in the intervals between cutting. Made in Japan, the machining center is ideal for offloading bigger, slower machines and performing secondary options regardless of production volumes.

Methods Machine Tools (Sudbury, MA) introduces the RoboDrill ecoPLUS, a larger-capacity and, when equipped with an optional 24,000 rpm spindle, faster machine.

Red Helix Cobalt Drill Bits

Like their predecessors, Milwaukee Tool’s (Brookfield, WI) Red Helix Cobalt Drill Bits limit heat buildup with an aggressive 35-degree helix angle that varies along the flute to end at 15 degrees.

Sandvik Updates CoroBore 825 Tool

Sandvik Coromant’s (Fairlawn, NJ) CoroBore 825 can be adjusted radially to cover a wide range of diameters with one tool and, when used with Coromant Capto spindle or EH (exchangeable head) interfaces, gives manufacturers even more flexibility. Most recently, the company has dimensioned the tool’s dampers to suit every adapter size in the assortment.

Threading Insert Grade for Critical Parts and Materials

Made from alternating layers of titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN) and titanium silicon nitride (TiSiN), the nano-laminate physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating on the TTP2050 threading insert grade from Seco Tools (Troy, MI) outperforms the general-purpose coatings often used on threading tools.

Deep-Cut Hole Saws

L.S. Starrett Co.(Athol, MA) has redesigned the Deep-Cut Bimetal Hole Saw with a pattern of seven different progressive teeth called NVP Tech (new variable pitch) and matching tooth set. Combined with extra-cobalt tooth material for enhanced heat and wear resistance, the changes provide fast and aggressive but smoother cutting action.

DirectDex Line Replaces Sandvik Deep-Hole Drilling Tools

DirectDex drill heads, inserts, and guide pads from Sunnen Products Co. (St. Louis, MO) directly correspond to the previously available line of Sandvik Coromant CoroDrill 800 deep-hole drill heads, inserts, and guide pads. The new line’s BTA/STS (single-tube system) and DTS/Ejector (double-tube system) styles are designed to produce a low cost per bore with consistent performance.

Automation-Ready Gundrilling Machine

To give manufacturers the flexibility to grow with future production needs, Unisig (Menomonee Falls, WI) UNE Series gundrilling machines can be designed to be robot-ready so factories can automate doors, safety relays, internal part sensing, and intelligent process integration as budgets and schedules allow.

Universal Indexable Thread Mill and Insert

Suitable for materials up to 55 HRC, the T2713 thread milling system from Walter(Waukesha, WI) combines the advantages of thread milling with the efficiency of tapping.

The T2713 universal indexable thread mill handles various thread pitches and lengths and features a modular tool body with Walter Capto C8 interface for large threads and/or long overhangs.
