High-Accuracy Ring Encoder Resists Contamination

The Heidenhain ERM 2203 is ideal for contaminated environments and applications that don’t require an optical encoder’s accuracy level. The magnetic ring encoder retains the 200 µm signal period, but with approximately 30% less graduation error.

An alternative in machine tool applications, Heidenhain’s ERM 2203 ring encoder combines sturdiness with high accuracy.

The mid-range ERM 2203 ring encoder from Heidenhain (Schaumburg, IL) is ideal for position-measurement applications – such as gear-wheel grinding machines – that require high tolerance to contamination but not an optical encoder’s accuracy.

Like other ERM products on the market, the ERM 2203 retains the 200 µm signal period. However, graduation error has been reduced by approximately 30%,  interpolation error has been cut in half, and reversal error has been eliminated. Mechanically and electronically compatible to the company’s other ERMs, the 2203 can be substituted in applications requiring a higher performance level.

The ERM 2203 is a good alternative in machine tool applications due to its high accuracy combined with sturdiness. And compared to other encoder products using magnetic scanning, the ERM 2203 provides a much higher line count along with a lower interpolation error and generous mounting tolerances in the axial direction.

The ERM 2203 series is available in the 1Vpp interface with both distance-coded reference marks and single reference marks.
