Designed for the medical device and instrument market, Glebar’s CAM.3 microgrinder features faster speeds and feeds, a larger-diameter wheel, increased capability, and connection to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

Featuring faster speeds and feeds, a larger-diameter wheel, increased capability, and connection to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), the CAM.3 microgrinder from Glebar Co. (Ramsey, NJ) is ideal for manufacturing such medical devices as  guidewires with flats, multiple tapers, hex shapes, and other complex geometries as well as K wires, bone pins, orthopedic and sports medicine implants, instruments, and single-use disposable products 0.005 inches to 0.375 inches in diameter.

The 16-in grinding wheel is mounted on a servospindle with Annular Bearing Engineers Committee (ABEC) Class 7 spindle bearings that reach over 20,944 surface ft. It can be fitted with a 6-axis robot within the enclosure, providing additional axis and automation capabilities. Dual-carriage linear motor feed powers the collets, which spin up to 250 revolutions per second (RPS). The work head can be tilted 5 degrees to grind sharp corners and true threads.

Built on a 6,500-lb mineral cast base for vibration dampening with embedded air and oil lines, the CAM.3 repeatedly produces parts to submicron accuracy. The enclosure includes safety interlocks and the machine is CE-certified for the European market. The electrical enclosure includes a built-in AC cooling system.

Program work wheel, main spindle, and collet positioning using a touchscreen with large 16-by-9 aspect ratio. IioT-enabled sensors can be built in to monitor temperature, pressure, and vibration of key mechanical components.

The CAM.3 comes with MTConnect capability and complies with open platform communications (OPC) unified architecture (UA) machine-to-machine communication protocol. Controller can be expanded to add peripherals such as loaders, inspection gages, and other automation types.
