Rougher/Finisher Combo Is Up To 300% More Efficient Than Drill/Reamer Combinations

Unlike boring tools that involve time-consuming benchwork and complicated measuring for proper part repositioning, Seco Tool’s JC898 rougher and JC899 hybrid stacker simplify CFRP-titanium and CFRP-aluminum hybrid material holemaking and milling operations by eliminating post-machining work.

By reducing stress imparted to stacked materials during machining, Seco Tool’s JC898 rougher and JC899 hybrid stack finisher improve workpiece quality, particularly for CFRP-titanium applications that are otherwise likely to produce burrs.

Aerospace shops can solve difficult holemaking and milling operations in hybrid stacked materials with the JC899 hybrid stack finisher and JC898 rougher from Seco Tools (Troy, MI).

The rougher/finisher combination offers three to six times longer tool life than  drill/reamer combinations and generates pollution-free holes and side walls with perfect surface finishes without the time-consuming step of removing chips that lodge between the stacked material layers. Users can achieve up to 300% greater process efficiency.

The JC898’s advanced frontal teeth design for helical interpolation reduces cutting forces and minimizes the risk of delamination when working with hybrid stacked materials, which can put considerable pressure on Z-axis drilling operations and generate chips that can damage the machined hole’s surface finish.

The JC899’s two-in-one geometry eliminates chip pollution and eliminates the need to unstack and clean hybrid stacked materials after machining. The diamond-based STAX coating ensures reliable processes and high-quality products, while the double geometry’s left-hand helix prevents delamination, fiber pullout, and chip marks from damaging the workpiece’s surface.

Unlike boring tools that involve time-consuming benchwork and complicated measuring for proper part repositioning, the JC898 and JC899 eliminate post-machining work to significantly simplify CFRP-titanium and CFRP-aluminum hybrid material holemaking operations. The resulting processes are twice as fast as those performed with alternative solutions, and tool life is doubled.

By reducing stress on stacked materials during machining, the tools improve workpiece quality, particularly for CFRP-titanium applications that are otherwise likely to produce burrs.

The tools handle lengths or stack heights from 15 mm to 60 mm. The JC898 is available in 8-mm and 15-mm diameters; the JC899 is available in 8.5 mm and 14.8 mm (finisher) as well as a 0.375-inch diameter.
