Mark Your Calendar for Virtual Workshop April 22: Certification, Standardization in AM Adoption

ASTM’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence will host a program filled with technical talks and panel discussions focused on technology adoption through standardization and certification. Recognizing current gaps to meet the needs of industries like aerospace, medical, and automotive, ASTM and its German testing/certification partner are making the workshop open to all AM professionals.

Globally accepted, market-relevant standards are required to meet the growing demand in the application of AM technology, according to this workshop’s technical co-chair, Khalid Rafi. Also co-chairing the event are Gregor Reischle and Carl Dekker.

On April 22, the ASTM (W. Conshohocken, PA) International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) will host a virtual workshop on accelerating additive manufacturing (AM) technology adoption through standardization and certification.

The need is clear: As additive manufacturing matures as part of mainstream manufacturing, standardization and certification continue to be key in advancing the use of AM technologies. And as these technologies continue to rapidly advance, gaps are evident in meeting many industry-specific needs.

Presented in partnership with TÜV SÜD, a German testing and certification organization, this workshop will provide an understanding of the following topics:

  • Bridging the gap between standards and certification
  • AM certification approaches: Meeting requirements for delivering AM parts to regulated industries, and
  • Standardization in AM processes, including: multi-laser technology, in-situ process monitoring and control, process workflow, digital workflow, materials, and polymer specific processes

“In regulated industries such as aerospace, medical, and automotive, certification is essential to gain market access,” says Dr. Khalid Rafi, ASTM International’s senior lead for additive manufacturing program development. “Certification scheme development is quickly advancing but it depends on specific standards to cover the entire value chain. Therefore, globally accepted, market-relevant standards are required to meet the growing demand in the application of AM technology.”

Featuring technical talks and panel discussions, the workshop is open to all AM professionals interested in exploring and understanding the standardization and certification process, as well as those looking to implement best practices into their additive manufacturing activities.

Register for the workshop at: www.amcoe.org/virtualworkshop. Cost is $100 for ASTM members and $150 for nonmembers.
