3D Reality Capture Puts the Whole Scene on a Screen

Industrial sites can be inhospitable environments that risk the health and safety of employees and visitors with extreme temperatures, corrosive materials, moving machinery, and heavy objects. Some also often have networks of pipes, tunnels, storage vessels, and other structures that must be examined. 3D reality capture permits complete site visualization for safety training and improving plant efficiency.
Distributed by Exact Metrology (Brookfield, WI and Cincinnati, OH), Leica Geosystems’ RTC360 3D portable coordinate measuring machine (CMM) measures large-scale objects using 3D reality capture, a process that scans, captures, and visualizes measurement data as a 3D digital model that can be used for design and comparison purposes.
The CMM combines a 3D laser scanner with Leica Cyclone Field 360, a mobile device app for edge computing that automatically registers scans in real time, and Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360, an office software that integrates the 3D model into the workflow. The user can capture scans – including enriching HDR imagery – in less than two minutes, automatically recording moves from station to station and augmenting data capture with information tags.
Low-noise data allows for better images, producing crisp, high-quality scans that can be used in a variety of applications. With a measuring rate up to 2 million points per second, automated targetless field registration (based on VIS technology), and automated data transfer, the device and software greatly boost productivity.
