5-Axis Machine Optimizes High-Performance Cutting Tool Geometry

Rollomatic’s 5-axis LaserSmart 510 laser-cutting and ablation machine produces a superfine and cost-effective diamond-coated cutting edge with a surface finish that isn’t possible with EDM, electro-discharge (EDG) or grinding.

The technology used on the linear and rotary axes of Rollomatic’s LaserSmart 5-axis CNC laser-cutting machine provides highly accurate trajectories for complex cutting paths that remove just the right amount of diamond coating from a tool.
Thick-film chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond coatings leave the cutting edge dull and rounded compared to polycrystalline diamond (PCD) cutting tools.
Diamond-coated carbide cutting tools are a cost-effective alternative to polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools.

Polycrystalline diamond (PCD)- and chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-coated diamond carbide cutting tools are a great option when machining highly abrasive materials because the coating significantly increases tool life. However, a thick-film coating dulls the cutting edge and thin‐film coatings often wear prematurely.

The 5-axis LaserSmart 510 laser-cutting and ablation machine developed by Rollomatic Inc. (Mundelein, IL) probes the surface of the coated cutting edge to detect exact shape and position and then removes just enough of the coating to make the cutting edge sharp. Only a predetermined amount of the coating, just around the cutting edge, is removed.

The fine-laser cutting process achieves a superfine edge with a surface finish that’s unachievable by EDM, EDG (electro-discharge), or grinding. Conventional grinding with diamond wheels will invariably “pull out” entire PCD crystals, but laser cutting slices through the crystal and leaves a portion of the crystal in the matrix.
