Kays Engineering designed and manufactured the DeHoff 3060 boring machine to bore the bottom housing of a rail car hopper bin. The Missouri-based machine builder also customized a workpiece loading and fixturing system.

Designed and manufactured by Kays Engineering Inc. (Marshall, MO), DeHoff deep hole drilling and boring machines feature steel box ways and hand-scraped mating components instead of less-expensive linear guide ways and milled surfaces to provide superior vibration damping, extended tool life, and improved surface finish.

Designed for boring the bottom housing of a rail car hopper bin, the single-axis DeHoff 3060 boring machine is used in the railroad manufacturing supply chain. Kays also designed a custom workpiece loading and fixturing system specifically for the customer’s unique part.

The machine provides a maximum boring capacity of 3 inches (76.2 mm) and maximum boring depth of 60 inches (1,524 mm). To meet the rigorous material- removal requirements, the cutting tool is powered by a 40-horsepower spindle motor with a 4-speed gearbox. The machine features Beckhoff CNC controls with G-code programming capability.
