Two Affordable But Effective Tool Grinders

Walter’s Helitronic Raptor and two-in-one Helitronic Raptor Diamond (grinding/EDM) are aimed at shops that don’t require features like automatic tool support systems or automatic wheel/electrode changers, but want a high degree of flexibility for diverse tool types.

Walter’s Helitronic Raptor is an excellent entry-level machine for grinding and regrinding rotationally symmetrical tools within a small footprint.
Like other Walter two-in-one machines, an HSK interface for electrode/wheel grinding is standard on the Helitronic Raptor Diamond.

Developed to produce and re-sharpen rotationally symmetrical tools, Walter Helitronic Raptor and Helitronic Raptor Diamond grinding machines from United Grinding North America Inc. (Miamisburg, OH) provide flexible and cost-effective processing.

The automation-ready Helitronic Raptor is an economical all-around tool grinding solution, while the Helitronic Raptor Diamond extends the brand’s two-in-one grinding/EDM machine concept for re-sharpening carbide or PCD tools. Both are well-suited for shops that don’t require features such as automatic tool support systems or automatic wheel or wheel/electrode changers, but want a high degree of flexibility in the working area for diverse tool types.

The Helitronic Raptor features a 15.4 hp (11.5 kW) spindle and work envelope that accommodates tools up to 12.6 inches (320 mm) in diameter and 11 inches (280 mm) long, including end face operations.

The two-in-one Helitronic Raptor Diamond’s achieves low cycle times and better performance thanks to Fine Pulse Technology, which produces smoother cutting edges and super-fine finishes on tools made from the most common PCD types, from 10 µm grain size to coarse-grained formulations. The machine features a 15.4 hp (11.5 kW) spindle and work envelope that accommodates tools up to 15.7 inches (400 mm) in diameter and 10.6 inches (270 mm) long, including end face operations. HSK interface for wheel/electrode grinding is standard.

For optimal tool design, part production, and re-sharpening efficiency, both machines use Walter Helitronic Tool Studio.

In addition to low-vibration gray cast iron frames and gantry-type constructions, both machines accommodate a range of options including top loaders with 500-tool capacities integrated in the working area. Other options include glass scales, A-axis torque drive, a grinding wheel measuring probe, and a manual support steady rest.
