Easy-to-Use Laser Weld Monitor

Amada Weld Tech’s MM-L300A laser weld monitor improves weld performance by giving operators real-time feedback on production errors such as gaps between parts, missing parts, over-penetration, incorrect focus, and cover gas absence. The unit’s software simplifies setup and analysis.

For process design flexibility, the sensor for Amada Miyachi America’s 7-pound MM-L300A laser weld monitor mounts on the optical axis or in an off-axis position.

Designed to detect production errors such as gaps between parts, missing parts, over-penetration, incorrect focus, and cover gas absence, the MM-L300A laser weld monitor from Amada Weld Tech (Monrovia, CA) gives operators instant feedback on spot and seam weld quality.

The compact, high-resolution monitor determines weld success by detecting and recording a thermal signal from the area of laser interaction and provides an output waveform around which limits (max/min or envelope) can be set. Once limits are set, the unit compares a new weld waveform in real time to identify good or bad weld. Providing high temporal resolution — down to 1 microsecond — the MM-L300A with the SU-N300A dedicated thermal sensor enables precision monitoring of both continuous wave (CW) and pulsed lasers.

The monitor’s easy-to-use software simplifies sensor configuration, waveform envelope limit setup, and real-time or saved waveform analysis on Windows PCs. Plus, with machine-selectable setup schedules, the unit can monitor different welding conditions.

For process design flexibility, the approximately 7-pound (3 kg) system reduces setup space when integrated into a production line. The sensor mounts on the laser’s optical axis or in an off-axis position.
