All-in-One Tool Cuts Machining Time by 25%

Ceratizit’s FreeTurn tools enhance milling machine productivity by combining multiple-propertied inserts with variable approach angles. The spindle rotates the cutting surface 360 degrees to perform roughing, finishing, contour turning, facing, and longitudinal turning with one tool.

Ceratizit’s FreeTurn tools for high dynamic turning (HDT) machine all contours in one setup, lowering cutting time by 25%. The company’s tools are available with Dragonskin, a nanolayer coating of titanium aluminum nitride (TiAIN) with a 0.35 coefficient of friction that withstands application temperatures up to 1,832 degrees F.

Instead of conventional turning where each contour requires a separate tool, one FreeTurn tool for Ceratizit USA Inc.’s (Schaumburg, IL) high dynamic turning (HDT) completes all roughing, finishing, contour turning, facing, and longitudinal turning operations.

The system uses the milling spindle to perform the turning process. The cutting edge can be changed through rotation about the tool axis, allowing machining from all sides and providing significant savings on tools and changeover times. The approach angle can be adjusted during machining, which not only enables dynamic machining of almost any part contour in all directions, but also results in adjustable feed rates and perfect chip control.

Unlike conventional turning, the tool directs the cutting force through the tool into the spindle instead of the holder. This ensures optimized force distribution and reduced downtime. Manufacturers can expect 40% higher feed rate values, up to 90% fewer empty tool paths, and improved surface quality.

The tool features a screw-on indexable insert and slim shank for machining in narrow workpiece contours. The indexable insert can consist of several cutting edges with different properties. Individual approach angles, corner radii, chip breakers, coatings and cutting materials can be combined on a single insert as required.

A range of FreeTurn indexable inserts and holders is available to meet specific application and machining requirements.
