Cylindrical Grinders For Precise Packaging Components

United Grinding’s Studer S41 (universal) and S131R (radius internal) are designed to produce large, heavy canning and die-forming components from the extremely hard metals commonly used in the packaging industry.

United Grinding’s Studer S41 cylindrical grinder machines large, heaving canning and die-forming components from the extremely hard materials – such as carbide tungsten – preferred by the packaging industry. Swiveling wheelhead accepts up to four grinding heads to completely machine workpieces in a single clamping.
United Grinding’s Studer S131R cylindrical grinder produces complex workpieces with tapers between 20 and 90 degrees in a single clamping. Applications include hydraulic components such as axial pump pistons, guide plates, and housings made from hardened steel, cast iron, and copper.

Two cylindrical grinders from United Grinding North America (Miamisburg, OH) are designed to produce canning and die-forming components used in the packaging industry. Their StuderSIM software often enables operators to machine complex parts in a single clamping, deriving workpiece geometry from a drawing and generating all the data required for grinding cycles. Operators also can simulate grinding to check processes on a PC or on the machine itself.

The Studer S41 (universal) machines large dies out of tungsten carbide and ceramic materials; and enables shops to generate diameters, cones and transitional radii with polished surface quality through B and X/Z axis interpolation. The machine incorporates a direct-drive turret wheelhead with speed-controlled C-axis

featuring measuring systems on the drive motor and workhead spindle; a direct-drive turret wheelhead with integrated B axis; 0.00005-degree resolution; and  accepts a large number of universal, tandem, diagonal and internal-grinding wheelheads. The wheelhead swivels automatically and accepts up to four grinding wheels to machine workpieces completely in single clamping.

Configurable as a single-purpose machine for large-batch production, the machine features distances between centers of 39.4/63 inches (1,000/1,600 mm) and center heights of 8.9/10.8 inches (225/275 mm). Maximum workpiece weight: 550 pounds (250 kg).

The Studer S131R (radius internal) produces hydraulic components such as axial pump pistons, guide plates and housings from hardened steel, cast iron and copper; and handles single-clamping production of complex workpieces with tapers between 20 degrees and 90 degrees.

Fully automatic, completely sealed, simultaneously swiveling direct-drive B axis offers superior thermal stability, mechanical rigidity and interpolation from -60 to +91 degrees, while the workhead C-axis enables form and thread grinding. High-precision axis drives with linear motors add speed and accuracy, and a -50˚ to +280˚ swiveling turret with four grinding spindles enhances grinding flexibility.

With a swing diameter of 11.8 inches (300 mm) above the table, 13.780 inches (350 mm) X-axis/cross slide travel and 15.748 inches (400 mm) Z-axis/longitudinal slide travel, the S131 can machine external diameters up to 6.3 inches (160.02 mm) with an external grinding wheel 9.8 inches (248.92 mm) in

diameter. It accommodates parts 11.8 inches (299.72 mm) long and 220 pounds (99 kg), including clamping device.

Both machines have high-precision axis drives with linear motors, Granitan S103 mineral casting beds to dampen vibration, thermal stability and guidance accuracy, and StuderGuide guideway and linear drive system for high wear resistance and long working life.
