Winners of Welding Competition at Wisconsin Manufacturing & Technology Show
Three welding students won scholarships at the Wisconsin Manufacturing & Technology Show (WIMTS), which was held Oct. 5-7 at Wisconsin State Fair Park.

The winning students were Mikayla Graeme of Blackhawk Technical College, Alex Bojar of Waukesha County Technical College, and Lauren Hoffman of Madison Area Technical College. As the first-place finisher, Graeme won $750 to use on tuition; the second-place finisher, Bojar, won $500 to use on tuition; and the third-place finisher, Hoffman, won $250 to use on tuition.
There were also three “honorable mention” award winners: Angel Rodriquez of Waukesha County Technical College and Ryan Beck and Kyle Hemenway, both of Lakeshore Technical College. Each of these winners received $100.
The scholarships were provided by Hasting Air Energy Control Inc. (New Berlin, WI). The welding equipment, fume extraction equipment, and steel coupons were provided by Hastings, FumeVac, IVEC Systems, The Lincoln Electric Co., Waukesha Metal Products, and Welders Supply.
Each contestant had to perform four welds:
- Horizontal 3/16″ fillet weld on 10-gauge carbon steel
- Vertical down 3/16″ fillet weld on 10-gauge carbon steel
- Horizontal 1/4″ fillet weld on 1/4″ carbon steel
- Vertical up 1/4″ fillet weld on 1/4″ carbon steel
The welds were performed with different processes: the 10-gauge welds with GMAW, the 1/4″ welds with FCAW.
The welds were judged by welding professionals from Caterpillar, Komatsu, and Servo-Robot.
