Developments in shrink-fit technology save your shop time and increase tool rigidity, provide better concentricity, and improve cutting performance.

New Robotic Cell can Shrink and Unshrink a Tool in 60 Seconds

The new HAIMER USA LLC (Villa Park, IL) Automation Cube One with Siemens Sinumerik One control, which can shrink and unshrink a tool in 60 seconds, measure it and transfer the data to the machine and databases, is a massive robot cell for 24/7 operation. With regard to the spindle interface, the new cell can manage up to three different interfaces simultaneously, and up to eleven axes’ handle the parts. “We have learned from our Automation Cube pilot project in recent years,” said Andreas Haimer, managing director, HAIMER. “In line with customer requirements, our new robotic cell is built as massively as a machine tool. For this purpose, we have brought various partners on board. Siemens supplies the latest Sinumerik One CNC control. Without the full, fast and highly competent support from Siemens, we would not have been able to realize this new machine within a record time.”

In the end, many experienced global and regional partners also worked on the realization of the project.

A New Generation of Induction Units for Operating Shrink Holders

Iscar USA (Arlington, TX) now offers the SHRINKIN Induction Heating Unit for Thermal Shrink Tool Chucking (professional), and the SHRINKIN Induction Heating Unit for Shrink Tool Chucking (entry level). The professional level automatic machine features liquid cooling and drying processes, providing a cooling time of 30 seconds. A fully automated process guarantees maximum operator safety. The heated shrink chuck is lowered directly into the cooling position following the shrinking process, while the operator cannot touch the hot chuck. Software and operating parameters work with ISCAR products, as well as other standard shrink chucks.

Advantages include the fact that the shrink holder cannot be overheated as it remains at room temperature at all times. Liquid cooling is 10 times more efficient than contact cooling. Concentricity is maintained by the uniform cooling process. There is also a reduction of non-productive time as the cooling process is performed within seconds. What’s more, the interface between user and the

application is graphic based, which features an intuitive operation, it is self-descriptive, and offers increased visibility.

The entry-level shrink machine is a an air-cooled, table-top machine with a manual spool guiding system, which together with patented ferrite discs ensures low operating costs with additional benefits. The machine is small, light and powerful, offering ease of handling at the push of a button. Tool change is enabled within seconds, and input of the shrink parameters are made simple by scanning barcodes. The energy saving induction technology enables longer tool life.
